Iraq to build longest submerged tunnel in the Middle East, boosting trade routes

Iraq is planning to start a large infrastructure project by constructing a submerged tunnel under the seas of Basra. This ambitious tunnel would link the Iraqi International Highway from Umm Qasr Port in Basra to Ar Rutba in Anbar, with the Al Faw Grand Port.

The General Company for Ports of Iraq (GCPI) recently announced the completion of the first portion of the road linking Al Faw Port to the future tunnel. According to Iraqi officials, the tunnel will span nearly 2.4 kilometers, making it the longest submerged tunnel in the Middle East. This project is part of the multi-billion-dollar Al Faw Port development and will link Basra’s oil hub to the nearby port of Umm Qasr.

The tunnel’s innovative design will provide flexibility for moving both goods and commodities. It seeks to increase trade between Iraq and the rest of the region by establishing the Al Faw Port as a vital crossing point for trade. It is anticipated that the project would boost Iraq’s position in international trade channels and provide new economic prospects.
