Construction complete on Italy’s Rocchetta Tunnel

Webuild has completed excavation of the 6.5km Rocchetta Tunnel on the Apice–Hirpinia section of the Naples–Bari high-speed/high-capacity railway in southern Italy, marking a key milestone on the strategic TEN-T Scandinavian–Mediterranean Corridor.

The tunnel, the longest on the Apice–Hirpinia section, was excavated on behalf of RFI (FS Italiane Group) using the TBM “Futura”. The 12m-diameter machine completed the drive in 18 months while operating continuously, supported by more than 140 specialised technicians working around the clock.

Powered by 18 motors with a combined output of 6.3MW, the TBM installed more than 32,500 precast concrete segments to create the tunnel’s final lining. Rocchetta is the second tunnel completed on the section following excavation of the Grottaminarda tunnel.

The Naples–Bari railway will comprise 145km of new line, including 15 tunnels, 25 viaducts and 20 stations and stops, strengthening connections between southern and northern Italy and the wider European rail network.

The 18.7km Apice–Hirpinia section crosses the provinces of Avellino and Benevento, with around 13km running underground through challenging geological terrain. Webuild said about 700 people, including subcontractor personnel, are currently employed on the lot, while more than 650 suppliers have been involved since construction began. Excavation of the 4.4km Melito Tunnel, the final tunnel on the section, is scheduled to begin this summer.

Elsewhere on the scheme, tracklaying on the Naples–Cancello section has been completed, with testing underway ahead of commissioning planned for summer 2026.
