Message from the ITA president‍

The central role of the World Tunnel Congress as the leading international forum for underground infrastructure

This edition of the ITA Newsletter comes at a particularly exciting moment for our Association, as we move steadily towards the ITA World Tunnel Congress in Montréal, to be held from 15 to 21 May 2026. Under the inspiring theme “Connecting Communities through Underground Infrastructure”, WTC 2026 is already shaping up to be an outstanding success.

The response from our global community has been truly remarkable. By the end of March, registrations have exceeded 1,900 participants, confirming once again the central role of the World Tunnel Congress as the leading international forum for underground infrastructure. The scientific programme reflects the same strength, with nearly 700 technical papers accepted and published in the Congress Proceedings, offering an exceptional overview of innovation, research and best practices from all continents. At the same time, the exhibition is fully booked, with over 200 booths, highlighting the vitality and technological excellence of our industry.

Beyond these impressive numbers, the Congress theme captures the very essence of what we do every day. Designing and constructing underground infrastructure is not only about transport systems, utilities or underground spaces for human and commercial activities. It is about connecting nations, uniting people, and creating resilient, sustainable links that support societies and future generations.

I look forward to meeting you all in Montréal to celebrate our shared commitment to shaping a better world underground.

Andrea Pigorini
President of ITA 2025-2028
